Orphie is a manual mileage log for US gig drivers. Start, Pause when needed, End, then Save. Nothing starts by itself.

The estimated deduction is logged business miles × 76¢, the IRS rate for Sam's Saturday. It lowers taxable income; it isn't cash, a refund, or tax saved. Eligibility includes the rules for choosing the standard rate, and commuting isn't deductible. Read the mileage log guide.

Sam chooses the Toyota Prius and Amazon Flex, then taps Start shift. Logging begins with that tap, not when the car moves.
The screen shows business miles, active shift time, and an estimated deduction. Orphie logs the route and detects stops without naming them.
Sam taps End shift. The review opens. Location keeps running briefly in the bounded window explained below.
The route has a start ring, an end dot, and stop dots. Sam checks 58.5 miles, 4:06 active time, and the editable count, "Detected 38."
Because Sam turned on City names, the phone's map service looks up the start and end cities. Orphie drafts "Amazon Flex shift: Seattle to Kent, WA (38 stops)." Sam can edit it and add a note.
Sam taps Save shift. The End-time snapshot goes into the Log. No shift runs between gigs, so no miles are logged then.

Afternoon · Uber

Sam selects Uber and starts a separate shift. It will appear in the same Log as the morning's Flex shift.
Orphie logs this shift's miles and time. The selected app is a label Sam chose, not a connection to an Uber account.
Sam pauses for personal driving. Location turns off. No miles or route are recorded, leaving a gap on the map, never a dashed line.
Sam taps Resume to restart logging. A new route segment begins where the car is now. Active shift time leaves out the pause.
Sam ends the shift and reviews 53.9 miles, 3:11 active time, and "Detected 6." The stops count is editable, and the stops have no names.
Sam checks the map and the drafted "Uber shift: Kent to Seattle, WA (6 stops)" description, then taps Save. Both shifts are in the Log, newest first.

When you tap End.

Location keeps running quietly for up to 10 minutes, or until the car has been parked for 2 minutes, whichever comes first.

If you were paused when you tapped End, location stays off.

Resume within the window

The extra stretch joins the shift. This gives you a limited way to recover from an early End tap.

Save instead

Orphie keeps the snapshot from the moment you tapped End and drops the extra stretch. Save also ends location recording.

More than one app.

A shift can have several app labels. Pick the apps you're driving for before Start, or change them during the shift.

Those labels apply to the whole shift. Orphie can't tell which miles were for which app, detect a switch, or split the route by app. It never connects to your gig accounts.

Not on the list? Add your own in Settings › Apps: a brokerage, a client, your own business. It shows up with the others every time you get ready to drive.

Sam uses one app per shift in this example. You don't need a separate mileage log for each app.

Fixing a shift.

Correct a saved record

Correcting a GPS shift's miles requires a reason. The shift gets a "Miles corrected" label, keeps the original GPS miles, and stores a correction history. You can also edit the apps, vehicle, stops count, description, and note.

Add a shift by hand

If you forgot to start, enter the shift in the Log yourself. It is permanently marked "Added by hand" and has no route. A manual entry doesn't recreate missing GPS data.

Delete a shift

You can delete a saved shift from the Log after confirming. If you started one by accident, tap End, Save it, then delete it from the Log.

Choose the workflow you can keep up with. Automatic trackers vary by app, settings, and plan; many also offer manual logging.

Paper log

How logging starts: You write down the drive and its details.
Personal drives: You decide what to include and leave out.
What you do after: Check the miles, date, destination, and business purpose you wrote.
Account needed: No.
Gig logins: Not needed.
Export and backup: You make copies or photos and keep them somewhere safe.

Automatic tracker

How logging starts: Automatic mode detects drives, subject to permissions and settings.
Personal drives: May record them too, so classification or review may be needed.
What you do after: Review trips, classify miles, and check or add missing details.
Account needed: Often. Check the app's requirements.
Gig logins: Many mileage apps don't need them. Some offer account linking.
Export and backup: Commonly available, depending on the app and plan.

Orphie

How logging starts: You tap Start. There is no automatic detection.
Personal drives: Pause turns location off. You choose when to Resume.
What you do after: Tap End, review the shift, then Save. Three taps plus Pause when needed.
Account needed: No account or sign-in.
Gig logins: Never needed. App names are labels only.
Export and backup: PDF and CSV for your tax preparer from the Taxes tab, and every record from Settings. No backup yet; records stay on your phone.

No Orphie server. No account or sign-in. No gig logins. Orphie stores the Log on your phone.

The phone's own map service draws the route map: Apple Maps on iPhone, Google Maps on Android. City names in descriptions is off until you turn it on. Then Orphie sends the shift's start and end location once after End and gets back city and state names.

Backup isn't available yet. Local storage is not a backup, so don't rely on Orphie to restore records if your phone is lost or replaced. Export your records now and then and keep the files somewhere safe.
